5 Days with Healthy Children Project
It has taken me over a week to process and recap the 5 days I recently spent with the Healthy Children Project faculty. We all gathered in warm weather bonding as “breastfeeding nerds”. We laughed and played lactation games and reviewed groundbreaking research from Uganda and studied the ideal breastfeeding latch. While we worked hard, every minute for me was thrilling. I continue to be on a sharp but fascinating learning curve.
At times I broke out in a sweat trying to contribute to my team playing lactation Password or lactation Pictionary. Or while we were videotaped providing flash cards for difficult vocabulary for students in the Lactation Counselor Training Course. Words like cholecystokinin and phenylketonuria…
Certainly, the best aspect of the trip was getting to know this incredibly caring and intelligent group of women. Advocates for breastfeeding, many for decades, these women could not have been more kind or welcoming to me, the new kid on the block. New friends who share a passion.
The work retreat invigorated me and further ignited this desire to learn and help and promote. With much gratitude, I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of this research-based institution. It’s hard to put my enthusiasm into words.
